Matt Starai was the story yet again, striking out 10 as St. Charles East won Game 1 of an Upstate Eight River doubleheader against Geneva 5-0. But the Vikings came back to win 5-4 in Game 2 to earn the splt.

Paul Kowalyszyn is officially on board as the new face of Streamwood’s boys basketball program. The 27-year-old Larkin graduate was introduced as the team’s coach Thursday. He replaces Tim Jones, who is retiring after six years at the helm.

Elgin mounted a four-run rally in the top of the sixth and pushed past Larkin 6-5 in the opener of a three-game Upstate Eight River series at Trout Park. Isaac Narayan went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored the go-ahead run on Alex Buttell’s one out double in the sixth.

Boys basketball: Jim Roberts hired as new coach at Jacobs
Jim Roberts officially was named the new boys basketball coach at Jacobs on Wednesday, marking his return to the Fox Valley Conference. The 1996 Lake Zurich graduate was the FVC Player of the Year his senior season.
