Two-time Courier-News Softball Player of the Year Lissa Fehlman, former multi-sport standout athlete Joe Manning and the 1971-72 boys basketball team will be inducted into the St. Edward Hall of Fame on Sept. 30.
Fehlman and the hoops squad will be recognized during halftime of the St. Edward home football game at Greg True Field. Manning will be honored posthumously.
Fehlman, who graduated from St. Edward in 2005, was a standout softball player who led the Green Wave to the 2004 Suburban Catholic Conference championship, was a four-time all-SCC honoree and was named league player of the year as a junior.
Fehlman also was a four-year varsity letter winner in basketball and three-time all-SCC honoree. A career 1,000-point scorer in basketball, Fehlman also qualified for state as a tennis player as a senior. Fehlman played softball on scholarship at the University of Evansville.
Manning, a 1949 St. Edward graduate, was the leading scorer for the Green Wave football team during the 1947 and ’48 seasons and was team MVP as a senior, leading the squad to a conference title.
He also established school records in track in the 100- and 220-yard dashes — which he held until the 1964 season when he coached the athletes who broke them. Manning coached track and football at St. Edward from 1960-64.
Manning became a teacher and coach at Huntley in 1965 and was the varsity football coach there from 1975-82. In 1983, Manning was named Huntley’s athletic director, a position he held until his retirement in 1994.
The 1971-72 basketball team posted a 25-3 record, losing to eventual state Class A runner-up Mounds Meridian on a last-second shot. The Green Wave won the West Suburban Catholic Conference title as undefeated champion, claimed a national free-throw competition and reigned as the Marengo Holiday Classic winner.
The team was coached by Bob Fuller and assistants James Swift and Tom Green.
Players included: Christopher Dolan, Jeff Nolan, Bob Sauceda, Carroll “K” Alters, Craig Hedley, Denny Butzow, David Bell, Marc Whalen, Steve Pavlik, Norm Hansen, Terry Wahl, Bob Harney and Joe Palumbo. Team managers were Mark Conlon and Dennis Neylon.
An informal dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Oct. 1 at the Riverside Club on the northeast side of Elgin.
