Valparaiso University is a big fan of St. Edward High School.
At least the Crusaders are huge fans of the Green Wave golfers. And it is fair to say they like the Crusaders just as much.
Brad Winters and Eric Winters, both St. Edward graduates, are actively golfing for the varsity team. Waiting in the wings is yet another St. Edward alum, Michael Holevas, a freshman.
Both Winter brothers competed in the first outing of the year, the Battle in the Tetons, which was held at Headwaters at Tetons Spring in Victor, Idaho. Weber State University served as the host.
Brad Winters, a Valpo senior, took 13th in the outing by shooting a 220. The elder Winters shot 71s in the first and third rounds. Sandwiched between the pair of 71s was a 78. His younger brother, Eric Winters, shot a 229 to take 31st. Eric Winters shot a 76 in each of the first two rounds and closed with a 77.
As a team, Valparaiso finished second with an 883. Wyoming won the team title with an 847.
Britney Whitehead (Larkin) started her senior year at Eastern Illinois by taking fifth at the EIU-hosted Walt Crawford Open. Whitehead toured the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 22.61 seconds.
The outing, which was scored as a head-to-head dual between each team, was won by Southern Illinois. Eastern defeated Evansville and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, but lost to the Salukis.
SIUE got an assist from Cassidy Sherman (Jacobs) as it topped Missouri-Kansas City 2-1. Sherman, a freshman midfielder, assisted the goal at 54:52, which gave SIUE a 1-0 lead.
Iowa State sophomore Kyle Zankowski (St. Charles North) finished fifth at the Drake-hosted Bulldogs 4,000-meter classic. Zankowski crossed the finish line in 12:53.
Illinois Wesleyan’s Hannah Ketterling (St. Charles East) assisted the first goal of the IWU season. In a 2-1 loss to Calvin College, Ketterling, a junior midfielder, assisted the goal scored at the 87:03 mark of the contest..
Max Clink (St. Charles North) cracked the top 10 at the Northern Illinois Cross Country Open. The DePaul senior finished the 6,000-meter race in 19:36.13. He was ninth overall.
Maria Luna (Streamwood), an Elmhurst College sophomore, finished 59th at the Elmhurst College Early Bird Invitational. Luna finished the 4,000-meter race in 16:57.3.
The DePaul women’s soccer team was 4-2-1 after seven matches. DePaul junior defensive player Ren Stoecklin (St. Charles North) is starting as a defender.
The Illinois Wesleyan men’s soccer team was 2-0. Angelo Catalano (St. Charles Noth) and Jared Casey (St. Charles North) are both playing for the Titans.
Catalano, who has started both games, has one shot on goal. Casey, a sophomore defensive player, has subbed into one game.
