Spending up in down economy: I’m calling about the dog park issue in Elgin. I’ve lived in Elgin for 55 years now, and I honestly cannot recall a weaker, more liberal-spending city council than what we have now. Councilman John Prigge is the only one with common sense. Mayor Kaptain and the rest are spending so much money in a down economy and after the taxes were raised. Do we have so much money that we can afford to give it away to Hoffman Estates to build something we don’t need? I guess so. I guess Hoffman Estates sold us … ]]> Sat, 26 May 2012 08:08:35 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: Nothing for Biden to brag about? ]]>

Biden not bragging: Instead of Vice President Joe Biden knocking Mitt Romney, why doesn’t he discuss the great successes of the current administration? Or does the current administration have nothing to brag about? Keep crossing guards: On Sunday, April 15, there was (a Speak Out) in Viewpoint about Elgin doing away with most of the school crossing guards. That person was absolutely right. There are too many people these days who don’t want to stop at stop signs. The Elgin city fathers must not do much driving in the city, for you can see it going on every day of … ]]> Fri, 25 May 2012 08:05:20 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: Not sure what’s going on in Elgin ]]>

Questions about Elgin: What’s going on in Elgin? First I read that the mayor wants to allow chickens in Elgin, which is ridiculous. I drive by the McDonald’s restaurant on Summit Street that’s being torn down with no information on if it’s going to be rebuilt. When I come home from work, I find they have cut down several trees on my street with no explanation. What’s going on? Column cut off: The advice from Dr. Komaroff on page 14 of April 2 was cut off in mid-sentence. What gives? Editor’s note: We apologize for the error. The good doctor’s … ]]> Wed, 23 May 2012 08:14:19 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: Whale of a situation ]]>

Whale of a situation: I think if the Japanese whaling fleets kill all of the whales and call it a scientific expedition, the North Koreans are entitled to shoot a ballistic missile into space and say they are checking the weather over North Korea. I think if you clamp down on one, you should clamp down on both. Don’t pay for another dog park: The city of Elgin is looking to spend money on a dog park. There are already dog parks all over the place. It’s like having citizens paying for the same thing twice. It’s a great disappointment. … ]]> Mon, 21 May 2012 08:27:16 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: Lack of taste in house color choices ]]>

Color choices: I have a comment on some of the house colors in Elgin. It seems that people don’t have any taste in what color they paint their house. There are brilliant blues, greens and yellows. It makes Elgin look cheap. Isn’t there a way to pass a code so that people paint a decent color on their house? Seeking information: It would be great if the United States Post Office could send out a schedule of the dates when mail will not be delivered due to the holidays. It would also be great if Waste Management would send out … ]]> Sun, 20 May 2012 08:38:25 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: Lost-mail problem needs to be addressed ]]>

Lost mail issue: I want to talk about mail being lost. I don’t feel our postal service is being conscientious about delivering mail to the correct houses. Maybe this is how people are getting other people’s information. What can be done about this? Please, it’s very scary. It needs to be handled by the postal service. Better use of old Elgin High: I would like to see the old Elgin High School used more effectively. I believe they use a third of the space now for School District U46 administration. Can’t there be a charter school or a school for … ]]> Sat, 19 May 2012 08:06:19 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: Why single out McDonald’s over ‘pink slime’? ]]>

Beefing about McDonald’s: A Speak Out caller on Wednesday (April 4) seemed to focus heavily on McDonald’s restaurants. I wondered if the caller has an issue with McDonald’s. After all, their “pink slime” has been in ground beef and eaten just fine for decades. For some reason, the caller wants to pick on McDonald’s and ask if they are the perpetrator on extending the use of the product. Go figure. Wonder what the real issue is? Fowl idea: This is to Elgin with its chicken concern. I grew up on a farm. The roosters crowed every two hours. We have … ]]> Thu, 17 May 2012 08:05:42 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: Stop signs can’t replace crossing guards ]]>

Stop signs cannot replace crossing guards: I am a crossing guard. I read in the newspaper that I might be replaced by a stop sign. That got me thinking. Can a stop sign prevent children from entering the street with its arms and verbal commands? Can a stop sign determine if a driver is on a cellphone or otherwise distracted and not paying attention to the stop sign? Can a stop sign determine if road or weather conditions may affect a driver’s ability to stop and prevent children from entering the street before it is safe? Can a stop sign … ]]> Wed, 16 May 2012 08:14:23 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: Don’t partner with Hoffman Estates ]]>

Don’t partner with Hoffman Estates: I was reading Linda McDaniel-Hale’s column on Elgin helping to provide a dog park, water and fire protection to Hoffman Estates. I’m not in favor of those things. Don’t text and drive: I’m calling about the cellphone bill. I wonder if it’s been passed. I see a lot of people on cellphones while they are driving. One day when I was driving and approaching the light, I could see as clear as day a woman doing 50 miles per hour while using her cellphone. She went right through a red light. She might have hit … ]]> Mon, 14 May 2012 08:09:38 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: Clarifying separation of church & state ]]>

Clarifying separation of church & state: I would like to respond to the “Separation of church and state” comment. When Jesus said to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, he only meant for people to pay their taxes. As for separation of church and state, it means that our government will not force one religion on the people like England did. That is all it means. Don’t topple Toppel from crossing guard spot: I read a very interesting article in The Courier-News about the crossing guards in Elgin. It would be a shame to see Jenny Toppel at Coleman School … ]]> Sun, 13 May 2012 08:18:34 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: Don’t ignore all the others being killed ]]>

Don’t look the other way: Why are some people making such a fuss over one young boy being shot in Florida when there are one or more people being shot in Chicago every day? There are too many people who should be doing something instead of looking the other way. Isn’t it time to change their line of sight? Present facts about U46 contract: It seems that The Courier-News has their stories skewed. A few days ago, there was a short story saying that School District U46 teachers tentatively approved a new contract. In Sunday’s (April 1) newspaper, there is … ]]> Sat, 12 May 2012 08:05:37 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: What did that heart transplant cost? ]]>

A change of heart: Across the newspapers it was mentioned that former Vice President Dick Cheney received a heart transplant. There was not a single mention of the cost. What does a present-day heart transplant cost? It’s time we scrutinize some of our medical costs. Some of these costs are just exorbitant. Pitfalls of pit bulls: I’d like to know when the trustees of Elgin are going to ban pit bulls. They are concerned about other things but not about the dangers of walking the streets. I can’t walk my dog because I’m so afraid of the pit bulls that … ]]> Wed, 09 May 2012 08:10:10 -0500 <![CDATA[ Speak Out: Chickens in the city? ]]>

Egg layers in Elgin: This is about Mayor Kaptain turning Elgin into a chicken farm. Guess what? I’m getting 20 pigs. Have you ever experienced what pigs smell like? Can you imagine living next door to someone with chickens in their yard? Now I know why St. Charles and Geneva are more attractive than Elgin. We are the laughing stock of the Fox Valley other than Meadowdale. Editor’s note: The raising of backyard chickens is a permitted use within the corporate limits of St. Charles, as well as West Dundee and Naperville. Aurora, Geneva and Oswego are among the Fox … ]]> Mon, 07 May 2012 08:08:39 -0500
