Time for Republicans to take part in immigration reform

The big question on immigration reform is whether the Republican strategy will be to stall. Who among us can say what “border security” means?

If the Republicans have their way, will this question still be unanswered next year, preempting discussion of other immigration issues?

The president has said he will not twiddle his thumbs much longer on immigration reform, and there is good reason for him to make this clear. The immigration issue has not improved with age.

If the Republicans have what it takes to be part of the solution, it is time for them to step forward proudly and do it. They will be better off for the effort, in almost every way, and so will our country.

Renz offering free gambling assessments & treatment

As a problem gambling treatment provider, we’re often asked, “When does gambling cross the line and become an addiction?”

Some signs of a problem gambler often include lying to your partner about where you’ve been and how you’ve spent your money; lost sleep due to gambling stress and anxiety; reducing time one spends with family and work to gamble; feeling guilty about gambling; trying to cut back in gambling without success.

According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, an estimated 1 million Americans meet the criteria for pathological gambling a year, while another 4-6 million would be considered problem gamblers.

For these people, problem gambling has brought them enormous social, economic and psychological implications — they have lost their home, job, financial security, family and friends.

This month is National Gambling Awareness Month, and Renz Addiction Counseling Center is offering free gambling assessments and treatment throughout March at our Two American Way location in Elgin.

Gambling symptoms are not always easily recognizable, and the assessment will help determine if you have a gambling problem. It is also our hope that by offering free treatment for a month, that individuals will seek the help they need before they lose everything.

Shaw an excellent candidate for Elgin City Council election

It has been my privilege to know Toby Shaw for over 12 years. His integrity, common sense and fiscal management skills make him an excellent addition to our city council in this upcoming election.

As a graduate of Judson University with years as an Elgin resident, Toby is a great combination of loyalty and innovation that could further enhance our city council.
