Knee-jerk reactions, such as for gun control, often wrong

Knee-jerk reactions, such as for gun control, often wrong

If you do not know what to do, you resort to a knee-jerk reaction, and that is why we see this in the new cry for gun control.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Criminals have assault weapons and any military-style weapon made. They get them no matter what the law says. We, on the other hand, are barred from having these same weapons to protect ourselves. So if assault weapons are used, we are allowed to die because we lack the firepower to protect ourselves, thanks to politicians.

Hmmm — I wonder how many lives would have been saved if Sandy Hook teachers were allowed to bring guns to school, or if moviegoers were allowed to do the same. Sadly, some would die, but more would have lived.

And what of the parents? Are we overlooking their role in all this? No — it is more important to make political points and destroy the opposing party than do the right thing.

Look at all the high gun violence areas such as Chicago, and you will find the toughest gun control laws. Then look at cities that allow its citizen the right to not only own guns but also the ability to carry them concealed. There are Low, low crime rates. I wonder why?

Time for common-sense gun legislation to stop murders

After the carnage in Newtown, can anyone justify selling assault weapons and guns with extended magazines that allow any maniac to shoot hundreds of bullets at children, your neighbors, co-workers or the police?

No other civilized country permits citizens to possess such firepower. I guess that’s why we have about 12,000 gun-related homicides a year. In fact, we have more gun murders in a week than Europe has in a year.

We need to insist that politicians re-establish the assault weapons ban that lapsed in 2004 and not cave in to the NRA’s exaggerated defense of our Second Amendment rights. Assault weapons and extended ammo clips were not envisioned by the Founding Fathers when they wrote the Constitution. They aren’t used by hunters — their only real purpose is mass murder!

Also, our politicians need to insist on background checks when guns are purchased to prevent wackos, criminals and terrorists from arming themselves with more and more deadly weapons. The gun show loophole, where criminals don’t have to wait for a background check, must be closed to help prevent another mass murder.

We can’t tolerate gun violence as the price for freedom in the U.S. People shouldn’t have to die so some fanatic can continue to buy an assault weapons. What about our freedom from harm? Don’t we have a right not to be a victim?

It’s time our politicians ignored the NRA lobbyists and passed common-sense gun legislation.
