According to police, officers from the gang crimes unit attempted to stop a vehicle on Ball Street at Crystal Street for traffic offenses at 2:18 p.m., but the vehicle sped off westbound before contact could be made with the driver. The vehicle travelled several blocks before being abandoned, with the driver running away, police said. Bail was set at $75,000, and he was given an Aug. 8 court date.
Attacked at the station: Five 16-year-old youths told police they were attacked by 10 men shouting a gang slogan right after the five got off a Metra train at the National Street station at about 8:54 p.m. Friday. According to reports, the 10 might have been summoned to meet the train when one of four girls riding the same train from Chicago to Elgin made a phone call before it reached Elgin. After the 10 beat up on the five, the victims and witnesses said, the 10 attackers and the four girls got into cars and drove away. One of the 16-year-olds was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Hospital with a cut on his scalp, a lump on his forehead and marks on his back and arms.
Night burglar: A burglar broke into a home in the 300 block of Waverly Drive between 10 p.m. Friday and 12:45 a.m. Saturday, the occupants told police. The intruder apparently got in by using a brick to break a window next to the front door, police reported. Stolen were a watch, diamond rings, earrings, an iPhone, a gold necklace, and several purses.
