Choking charged: Rolando Chavez, 36, of the 1900 block of Portage Way, Elgin, was charged with a felony count of domestic battery and misdemeanor counts of domestic battery following an incident early Thursday in which he is accused of trying to strangle a woman. Bail was set at $10,000, and he was given a July 26 court date.
Bad checks: Police were searching for a man and woman who reportedly have been passing bad checks drawn on a certain bank account number. An employee of Geno’s Fine Wines and Spirit at 300 S. McLean Blvd. told police he had been warned about the couple by a friend who owns a neighborhood grocery store on Elgin’s west side. So when the couple showed up at his liquor store Tuesday evening, he refused to cash a check offered to him by the woman. The Geno’s employee said the woman then went behind his counter and grabbed the check out of his hand, and the couple then went to a nearby mailbox and dropped two checks into it. The employee persuaded a postal worker to retrieve the checks from that mailbox, and he turned them over to police.
