Invader fires shotgun blasts outside west-side Elgin home

Masked man fires into house: Police were investigating a case in which a masked man fired two shotgun blasts in an attempt to invade a house in the 800 block of Morgan Street on Tuesday. According to reports, someone knocked on the home’s front door at about 12:15 a.m. while a 29-year-old man was inside with a woman and two children. The knocker also called out the man’s name, they said. The man told officers that when he opened the door, he was confronted by someone who had his face covered with a purple bandana and was pointing a shotgun at him. The resident said he slammed the door in the gunman’s face, who then said, “You don’t want to do that” and fired the shotgun. A few seconds later, the victims said, the intruder or someone else fired a shotgun blast through a window in their living room, shattering the window. The residents said that as the woman called 911, they heard a car speed away. The 29-year-old told police he is not having any disputes with anyone and has no idea who the attacker was.
Safety check on tollway: Illinois State Police in District 15 will conduct a roadside safety check from 11 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, to 4 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, on the westbound exit ramp from the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) to Route 31. The ISP has zero tolerance for impaired driving in Illinois, according to State Police Capt. Joe Perez. Officers working this detail will watch for drivers operating vehicles in an unsafe manner, driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, transporting open alcoholic beverages or driving under the influence, he said.
Under the mattress: A 38-year-old woman told police that before she went sleep in her apartment in the 800 block of Bode Road at about 1 a.m. Friday, she put a plastic bag full of jewelry under the mattress and wedged her purse between her body and the bedroom wall. But when she woke up at 6 a.m., she said, the apartment’s front door was wide open, the bag of jewelry was gone and $300 was missing from the purse.
Copper theft charged: A resident of Willow Lake Estates mobile home park was charged with burglary Friday afternoon after another resident said he saw the man carrying an armful of copper piping out of a vacant home in the 1000 block of Lake Terrace Road. Police said the suspect, 45-year-old John L. McGrath, also was found to be wanted on a Kane County sheriff’s warrant for burglary.

Train vs. bicyclist: The death of a bicyclist struck and killed by a Metra train Monday morning was an accident, according to autopsy results. Train No. 2208, which originated in Elgin, struck the person near the Hanover Park station about 6:40 a.m., according to Metra spokesman Tom Miller. Juan Cordero, of an unknown home address, was fatally struck in the 1900 block of West Lake Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. An autopsy Tuesday revealed Cordero was on a bicycle when he was hit and that he died of multiple injuries from the collision, according to the medical examiner’s office. His death was ruled an accident.
