Fatal shooting in downtown Elgin

A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot in downtown Elgin Thursday evening, police said.
The shooting occurred sometime about 7:45 p.m. near the intersection of Dundee Avenue and Symphony Way.
Police had cordoned off a block-long section of Symphony Way between Dundee Avenue and Center Street.
After talking to witnesses the officers tracked down a vehicle near the intersection of Dundee Avenue and Symphony Way believed to be involved in the shooting, according a press release. After pulling over the vehicle police discovered a 16-year-old boy who had been shot once in the chest, according to the release.
The boy was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
