Algonquin

Car abandoned, drugs found: McHenry County sheriff’s police announced Tuesday that they had seized 700 grams of methamphetamine, valued at about $25,000, during an incident Thursday in Algonquin. Sheriff Keith Nygren said a deputy on patrol in the area of Randall and County Line roads became suspicious about a car and followed the vehicle into the parking lot of a shopping center. Seeing the deputy, two men inside the car ran away and have not been found, authorities said. A trained police dog then sniffed around the car and indicated to officers that it could detect an illegal drug inside, which led to the car being searched and the meth being discovered, deputies aid. Nygren said anyone with information about the case should call the sheriff’s office at 815-338-2144 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800—762-STOP.

Elgin

Felon found with gun: Shawn D. Baldwin, 43, of the 1200 block of Fairwood Court, Elgin, was charged with felony counts of possession of a firearm by a street gang member on land, possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a firearm with an expired firearm owner’s identification card/not eligible for a FOID card, and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number. According to police, he was arrested Monday with a .38-caliber revolver. Bail was set at $200,000, and he was given a Feb. 22 court date.

Bad Bowl party: A 31-year-old man told police Monday that he had been beaten by three men at a Super Bowl party in the Pingree Grove area on Sunday but was too drunk at the time to remember exactly where the house was or what his assailants looked like. Police said medical workers called them Monday to the emergency room at Provena Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin after the man’s injuries became worse and he went to the ER seeking treatment. The man told police his brother had driven him to the football-watching party Sunday. He said three men hit him and kicked him after he declined their request to change where he was sitting. Police said he sustained injuries to both eyes.

Caught while parking: A 21-year-old woman was arrested Monday after a parking control officer noticed that her car’s license plates had been suspended and that the car’s owner was wanted on several arrest warrants, according to police reports. Police said Alexandria Denae Smith, of the 900 block of Jefferson Avenue, Elgin, was stopped by a patrol officer when she returned to the car, which had been parked outside the Elgin Post Office on Grove Court. She was charged with obstructing a police officer after she allegedly told the officer she was somebody else. She also was wanted on several Kane County warrants for driving with a suspended license and failing to appear in court, police said. She was being held Tuesday in lieu of $1,400 cash bond.

Repeated damage: A man who lives in the 400 block of North Spring Street could offer no explanation for why somebody smashed his car’s windshield with a brick the night of Feb. 5-6, after previously damaging the car’s mirror and loosening the lug nuts on its wheels.
