Lot of damage: Burglars stole copper pipes from yet another vacant Elgin home, this time in the 700 block of Raymond Street, police reported Wednesday. A Realtor said the piping was stolen between Jan. 17 and Jan. 24. He said the basement was left filled with standing water and the burglars damaged the home’s walls, furnace and water heater while cutting the pipes. The Realtor told police the value of the copper as scrap was probably only $100 or so, but damage to the house added up to many times that much.

Bashed through door: Someone used a rock to break the glass front door on a business in the 1300 block of Gateway Drive and stole two television monitors from the office inside, also damaging the wall on which they were mounted, police reported. Company employees said the burglary occurred between Friday night and Monday morning.

Vacant home hit: A Realtor reported Monday that burglars had stolen a new refrigerator and stove from a vacant home along Knotty Pine Drive. Police said the burglars also broke off and stole a Realtors’ lockbox attached to the home, which held the home’s keys.

Identity theft: An Elgin woman told police that someone tried to open credit card accounts in her name with four chain stores. One, Lowe’s, actually had opened the requested account but the thief had not yet charged anything on it, she said. Similar attempts at JCPenney, Carson’s and Old Navy failed when the companies requested more information from the real person.

South Elgin

Five previous DUI arrests: Kenneth A. Nehring, 39, of the 200 block of Woodridge Drive, South Elgin, was charged with felony counts of aggravated driving under the influence for his fifth DUI arrest, driving on a suspended license, and driving with no insurance, according to police. Nehring was arrested on McLean Boulevard early Wednesday, police said. Bail was set at $100,000, and he was given a Feb. 8 court date.
