State Rep. Keith Farnham, D-Elgin, announced this week that he is returning more than 10 percent of the funds provided for his district office operations in fiscal year 2011 to the state treasury.
“Every year, legislators receive funds to operate their district offices; and instead of spending it all, I decided the most appropriate approach was to follow the example of so many of my constituents and do some belt-tightening,” Farnham stated in a press release.
According to the release, Farnham was allotted $69,409 in fiscal year 2011, which ended June 30, to run his district office. The money is to be used to fund district office operations, staff payroll, utilities, and equipment and supply purchases.
At the end of the fiscal year, Farnham had more than $7,260 left in his budget, which is a little over 10 percent of the allotment. Farnham said he still was able to maintain a full-time constituent service office. Each fiscal year, Farnham has returned money back to the state treasury.
“I know that this is a small amount compared to the size of the state’s fiscal challenges, but it’s a start and demonstrates what needs to be done across state government instead of increasing income taxes and fees on middle-class families,” Farnham stated.
