Tollway hearings set on toll hikes, projects

Updated: November 25, 2011 12:22AM

The Illinois Tollway will hold public hearings throughout northern Illinois this month to present details of its proposed $12 billion, 15-year capital plan.

The plan is designed to provide better travel conditions, relieve congestion, create jobs and stimulate the economy, and will be financed by bonds backed by a proposed toll rate increase for passenger vehicles, according to a tollway press release.

Among the tollway projects planned are reconstructing and widening Interstate 90 from Interstate 294 to Rockford; preserving I-88 and I-355; construction of the Elgin O’Hare West Bypass; and planning for transit on I-90.

Under the plan, toll increases for passenger vehicles would go into effect Jan. 1 and a previously approved commercial toll rate increase would start in 2015. I-PASS customers would see a toll rate increase of 35 cents at a typical mainline toll plaza, with cash-paying passenger vehicles continuing to pay double the I-PASS rate.

All of the public hearings will be webcast live on the tollway’s website. The tollway also is soliciting comments on its website and posting video of all public hearings at www.illinoistollway.com.

Area hearings include:

Kane County: 4-6 p.m. Aug. 18, Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Building A, Geneva.

DuPage County: 7-9 p.m. Aug. 18, DuPage County Government Center, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton.

DeKalb County: 7-9 p.m. Aug. 19, NIU Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Hwy., DeKalb.

McHenry County: 7-9 p.m. Aug. 19, Huntley village hall, 10987 Main St.
