A forum on drawing new legislative districts in Illinois is set for this month in Elgin.
The Special House Committee on Redistricting is holding public hearings around the state in April. A redistricting hearing will be held in the ballroom of The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way, at 4 p.m. Monday, April 18.
The state also is creating a redistricting website, illinoishousedems.com/redistricting, which will allow visitors access to national census data, state and national demographics, and population changes, along with current legislative district boundaries drawn in 2001.
States are required to redraw districts every 10 years following the U.S. Census.
“It is important to draw a map that accurately reflects the population changes over the past 10 years,” state Rep. Keith Farnham, D-Elgin, said in a press release issued Thursday. “Getting input from the public is crucial ....”
The new lines will be in effect following the 2012 elections for the next 10 years.
For more information or to join the list of those who wish to give testimony, call Farnham at 847-841-7130.
