ELGIN — A car crash snarled afternoon and rush-hour traffic for three hours on Elgin’s northwest side Wednesday and knocked out power to hundreds of ComEd customers.
Route 31 (State Street) was closed for hours between Wing Street and Big Timber Road.
Police said that for unknown reasons, a 1999 Cadillac crashed into a utility pole along Route 31 near Frazier Avenue at about 1:25 p.m. The driver, 40-year-old Jose Gomez of Roselle, was taken to Sherman Hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.
The blow knocked several power lines into the street and set the wooden pole on fire. Police blocked off the street until 4:45 p.m. while ComEd crews came to the scene and restored service.
ComEd spokesman Matt Levin said about 1,000 homes and businesses were left without power at the height of the blackout.
No charges had been placed against Gomez as of Wednesday evening.
