HAMPSHIRE TWP. — A Hampshire Township man was facing multiple weapon and other charges after he fired a gun outside a bar during an argument early Saturday, Kane County sheriff’s police said.
James Staples, 43, of the 17N400 Block of Harmony Road in unincorporated Hampshire, was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon (no valid firearm owner’s ID card), aggravated assault, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis. Staples was being held in the Kane County Adult Justice Center in lieu of $50,000.
According to a release from the sheriff’s office, deputies along with officers from the Pingree Grove Police Department responded to Old Starks Tavern at 43W478 Route 72 in unincorporated Hampshire Township on a report of gunshots being fired outside the bar.
When deputies and officers arrived, they were told that a verbal altercation had occurred in the parking lot between two men. At one point, one of the men got into a car, fired several shots into the air and then left, witnesses said. No one was hit by gunfire during the incident, although deputies found at least two shell casings in the parking lot, the release said.
Authorities put out an alert for the car the gunmen had left in, and about 90 minutes later sheriff’s deputies were informed that Elgin police had located the vehicle and taken the driver, identified as Staples, into custody in the parking lot of a restaurant in the 300 block of McLean Boulevard in Elgin, reports stated.
Staples was identified as the person who had discharged the gun in the bar parking lot and then fled the scene, authorities said. When Elgin officers took him into custody, they also found a 9 mm handgun, cannabis and drug paraphernalia in his possession, according to reports.
