Elgin shooting of 15-year-old believed to be gang-related

ELGIN — Police Tuesday continued their investigation of an apparent gang-motivated drive-by shooting that wounded a 15-year-old boy Monday night on the city’s southwest side.
The incident occurred just after 8 p.m. in the 200 block of Melrose Court.
Police said the teen was confronted by passengers of a passing car and that a verbal altercation broke out.
During the altercation, one of the car’s passengers pulled out a handgun and began firing, striking the boy once in the arm, according to police.
The teen was driven by a friend to Provena Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin for treatment of injuries that police described as not life-threatening. The status of his condition was not available Tuesday.
Members of the Elgin Police Department’s Gang Crimes Unit were investigating the incident.
