ELGIN — City Councilman Bob Gilliam was released from the intensive care unit Sunday at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital, where he was under observation as the result of a severe asthma attack.

In a press release sent late Sunday night, Gilliam stated, “I am thrilled to be released from ICU and to be feeling much better. I am grateful to the doctors and nurses who have taken such great care of me. And I’m especially grateful to the residents of Elgin who have been so supportive. I look forward to finishing up my treatment, and with your support on Tuesday, April 9th, continuing to serve you as City Councilman.”

Gilliam has been on the council since 1973 and is up for another term Tuesday.

Gilliam missed the March 24 League of Women Voters forum at the Gail Borden Public Library, and on April 2, his campaign manager, Traci Ellis, sent out a press release noting the hospitalization.

In that release, Gilliam stated, “I am still at St. Joseph’s hospital as a result of the severe asthma attack I recently suffered. As a precautionary measure, I was moved into ICU a few days ago. I have been down this road before with my asthma and want to assure residents that asthma is a very common condition and completely treatable.”

Monday morning Ellis said that Gilliam has been in the hospital for 12 days so far.

Gilliam, 68, was first elected to the council when he was just 28 years old. He worked from 1968 until 2002 as an educator in District U46.

Other candidates running for the four, four-year terms up for election are fellow incumbents Richard Dunne and John Prigge and challengers Tom Armstrong, Terry Gavin, Carol Rauschenberger, Cody Holt, Andrew R. Cuming, Mitch Esterino, Rosemarie Kahn, Jerri McCue, Grace Richard and Stephen Knight.
