Elgin fire captains recognized for 20 years’ service

ELGIN — Fire Captains Robb Cagann and Ken Nelson were honored this week for their 20 years of service with the department.
At an informal ceremony marking the occasion Monday morning at Station 6 on West Chicago Street, City Manager Sean Stegall said that Cagann was a model employee and noted Nelson’s professionalism and dedication as well as him serving as fire marshal for three years. Fire Chief John Fahy said both men had outstanding careers and noted to junior members of the department how 20 years can fly by quickly.
Both Cagann and Nelson received plaques and tokens of appreciation, with Cagann claiming a watch and Nelson an iPod mini.
Nelson had been a police officer in Glen Ellyn and Crystal Lake before taking his first firefighter job in Elgin. Cagann worked as a firefighter in Fox Lake and in Richmond, Ky., before joining the Elgin department.
Regarding what he likes about the job with Elgin, Cagann noted that the diversity of the operation, which provides multiple opportunities for firefighters — a statement seconded by Nelson.
“You can find your own niche here,” Nelson.
