Police car broadsided, hits hydrant

Updated: February 12, 2013 9:36AM

ELGN — A “low-profile” Elgin police car, painted black with no light bar on its roof, was patrolling for drivers violating traffic laws. It found one the hard way when it was struck in the side by a car that reportedly went through a stop sign at West Chicago Street and Melrose Avenue at about 3 p.m. Monday.

The officer who had been driving the police car and an 18-year-old boy who was driving the other car were treated at the scene by paramedics but not taken to a hospital.

After colliding with the other car, the police car knocked over a fire hydrant, which flew through the air for about 30 feet and knocked over a decorative wooden well in a neighboring sideyard.
