ELGIN — A man suspected in a couple of rooftop break-ins left a taunting message at one of the burglaries, giving a clue about at least one thing he and his partners in crime were after, according to police.

Isaac Aguirre, 18, of the 800 block of North Liberty Street, was charged with two counts of burglary Thursday. He is accused of breaking into Armando’s Supermarket, 925 N. Liberty St., on Jan. 8, and American Legion Post No. 57, 820 N. Liberty St., early Thursday. In each case, the burglars entered the building through the roof, police said.

And Aguirre wrote a telling tag on the Legion’s roof vent, according to investigators.

Police said they responded to a burglar alarm at the American Legion sounded at about 3:20 a.m. Thursday. Officers arriving on the scene saw no open windows or doors, but then spotted three men running from the building’s fire door. Police were able to apprehend one of the men, identified as Aguirre, on the 700 block of Hill Avenue.

According to police, the three men entered the post’s bar area through a roof vent, but nothing was taken before police arrived.

Officers found the words “Steak Lovin’ Burglars” written on a vent cover at the post — which Aguirre admitted to writing, and in his involvement in the earlier burglary, according to police.

In the Jan. 8 incident, three men entered the store through a roof vent, and took cash from six drawers and an unknown amount of skirt steak from the store’s meat counter, police said. Police were alerted to the break in when the men entered the store’s office area, sounding an alarm.

All three got away, but Aguirre also told police the men ended up dumping the steak a block away from the store following that burglary, according to reports. Police were still seeking the other burglars.

Bail for Aguirre was set at $60,000 on the burglary charges and he was given a Feb. 8 court date.
