BURLINGTON — The village board approved a new tax levy ordinance on a 5-1 vote Monday night.
The village will request $120,000 in 2012 property taxes through the levy, an increase of 11.4 percent over the $107,718 in property taxes collected last year.
Village attorney Nancy Harbottle said the $13,000 increase is for the purpose of maximizing receipts from new development.
“The village is doing this to capture any additional EAV (equalized assessed valuation); that’s the reason for the increase,” she said.
Prior to the vote, the board conducted a Truth in Taxation hearing regarding the proposed increase in the tax levy.
“The purpose of this hearing is to comply with Truth in Taxation when the levy is 105 percent or more of the prior year collected tax,” Harbottle said.
No public comments were received on the issue, and the hearing was closed. The board then approved the tax levy ordinance, with Trustee Betty Reiser casting the only dissenting vote.
