22nd District Kane County Board race recount in limbo?

Updated: January 5, 2013 6:15AM

ELGIN — While Republican Douglas Scheflow was set to take to oath of office to serve as the 22nd District representative on the Kane County Board Monday, Democratic challenger Bob Getz was still waiting to hear about the scheduling of a demonstration recount of the race results.

Contacted early Monday afternoon, Getz said that the county election board had suggested the recount take place at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Getz said a scheduling conflict would not allow him to attend the proceedings, so he was waiting to hear back if the recount would go on without him or be rescheduled.

Election night in early November ended with Scheflow 18 votes ahead of Getz in the west-side Elgin and Elgin Township district.

An official count submitted to the state and posted online last week declared Scheflow the winner by just 13 votes. A total 7,043 ballots were cast in the 10 precincts of the 22nd District, including 206 absentee and provisional ballots, with Scheflow getting 3,528 votes and Getz, 3,515 nods.

Getz, an Elgin Community College trustee, could choose two precincts — about 25 percent of all precincts in the district — to be recounted to make sure the original count had been done accurately, and he picked the 7th and 43rd.

A phone message left for the county election board Monday asking for more information on the possible recount had not been returned.
