Route 25 in Elgin will be closed for a week at Metra crossing

Updated: December 20, 2012 6:08AM

ELGIN — The good news is that construction workers will be making the Metra railroad crossing at Route 25 (St. Charles Street) smooth again.

The bad news is that to do that, Route 25 will be closed to traffic at the Metra crossing (near the ITW Shakeproof plant) for an entire week, from 7 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, to 7 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, Metra and state officials have announced.

And that will create something of a traffic bottleneck on Elgin’s far south side.

Illinois Department of Transportation spokeswoman Yeleina Haydel said detour signs will direct southbound through traffic on St. Charles Street or on Route 25 (which runs along Liberty Street north of Bluff City Boulevard) to turn eastbound onto Bluff City Boulevard, then southbound onto Gifford Road to westbound West Bartlett Road and back to Route 25.

The posted detour route for northbound through traffic on Route 25 will be to turn eastbound onto West Bartlett Road, then northbound onto Gifford Road to westbound Bluff City Boulevard and back to Liberty Street or St. Charles Street.

Drivers bound for South Elgin also could turn west onto Bluff City Boulevard, then south onto Raymond Street. Drivers in South Elgin wanting to head north on Route 25 could take Raymond north to eastbound Bluff City, then take that street back to Liberty.
