Fox View sweep finds gun

Updated: December 14, 2012 6:17AM

Carpentersville police regularly meet with the managers of what has been one of the village’s most gang- and crime-ridden neighborhoods, the Fox View Apartments.

Shortly before the last of those meetings, in October, two children had found a handgun in a wooded area near the complex. So the people meeting came up with an idea: Send a crew of people throughout the public areas of the complex and those woods to see if there was any other contraband hidden or abandoned there.

As a result, police announced this week, last Wednesday 30 people from the Police Department, the Fox View staff and the Carpentersville & Countryside Fire Protection District showed up at 9 in the morning and combed through the property for an hour.

And the search paid off. According to a statement from the Police Department, the searchers found a .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun, loaded with cartridges; a BB gun; and a knife.

The recovery of the handgun is especially significant because it was located in an area heavily traveled by children, a police spokesman said. He said the police department and Fox View management “will continue go work together to improve the quality of life for the residents of the apartment complex.”
