The factory next door: Police said two men were caught stealing almost a ton of steel products from a factory on the city’s northwest side. According to police reports, at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, employees at Amtec Precision Products, 1875 Holmes Road, saw Adarion A. Mahone and Leon A. Banks loading steel shelves stored at the rear of the Amtec plant onto a sled, then dragging the sled through a row of trees at the rear of the Amtec property. When police arrived, they said, they found the two men still working away. Officers said they then found large amounts of shelving and loose steel in the yard of Banks’ home, directly behind the Amtec property. Mahone, 19, of the zero block of Creekside Circle in Elgin, and Banks, 18, of the 1700 block of Devonshire Circle, Elgin, were charged each with a Class 3 count of theft. Banks also was charged with possession of burglary tools. Police said they had taken 1,660 pounds of materials, valued at $830. On Friday, bail for each was set at $15,000, and they were assigned Nov. 16 court dates.

Robbed in lot: A man told police he was walking through the parking lot of the Clock Tower Plaza Shopping center at 1 a.m. Monday when two men and a woman demanded money, hit him in the head and stole $5. He was treated at a hospital for a cut on his forehead.
