The Kane County sheriff’s office is seeking nominations for the Roscoe Ebey Citizen of the Year award.
The award was created in memory of 83-year-old Roscoe Ebey, who was murdered in his Aurora Township home in 2007. Ebey was a World War II military veteran and a popular member of his neighborhood. He was beaten to death in his home by a burglar who was later sentenced to 60 years in prison.
Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez created the Citizen of the Year Award in Ebey’s memory. The first recipient was Leslie Fleming, Ebey’s neighbor, who tackled the burglar and held him down until police arrived.
Perez encourages members of the community to recognize people who demonstrate “the spirit of selfless giving.”
Nominations should be sent via e-mail to dawnbarsanti@co.kane.il.us or by mail to Kane County Sheriff’s Office, 37W755 Route 38, Suite A, St. Charles, IL 60175. Nominations will be taken until Oct. 15. The award will be presented in November.
A listing of past award recipients and a history of the award can be found at the Kane County Sheriff’s website, www.kanesheriff.com.
