ST. CHARLES — Construction began Thursday on a temporary public parking lot on the east side of First Street between Illinois and Main streets. The project, to be completed by Martam Construction Inc., will create an additional 50 public parking spaces.
An asphalt walkway also will be installed along the east side of First Street to provide access from Main Street to the parking lot. In addition, the owners of the property at the southeast corner of Main and First will remove the chain-link construction fence there and install a decorative fence in its place.
City spokesman Chris Tiedt said the work will take approximately three weeks. Tiedt said there may be some temporary lane closures during the day as well as construction traffic on First Street during the project. Also, the parking space designated for disabled persons on the east side of First Street will not be available during construction. This space will be removed and relocated to the new parking lot upon completion.
Tiedt warned that motorists and pedestrians should pay special attention to roadway conditions, equipment and workers during construction.
