Clarissa Schauer, 40, of Cary was sentenced Wednesday to four years in prison for embezzling more than $185,000 from the Algonquin company that employed her.

She had been found guilty of Class 1 felony theft.

Prosecutors said that between Dec. 12, 2005, and Sept. 17, 2009, Schauer obtained unauthorized control over $185,741.48 from World Trans International. Her responsibilities there included dispersing checks to vendors of the company. Over the course of her employment, Schauer issued numerous checks to herself and not to the designated vendors, according to a press release from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The judge also ordered Schauer to pay the full amount in restitution to the company. Prosecutors said she was able to come up with only a small portion of the restitution prior to sentencing.

The case was investigated by the Algonquin Police Department and prosecuted by Robert Zalud and David Johnston of the state’s attorney’s office.
