Carpentersville schools to offer free summer meals

Updated: July 19, 2012 6:07AM

CARPENTERSVILLE — It’s not the pool, the popsicles, sleeping in late or anything else you traditionally might associate with summer vacation.

Hunger is one of the most severe roadblocks to learning, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Many students receive free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch through the School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs during the school year, according to the USDA. But a lack of nutrition during the summer months can set up a cycle for poor performance once school begins again, the department said.

The USDA Summer Food Service Program is designed to fill that nutrition gap and make sure children get the nutritious meals they need, the USDA said.

That program will provide free meals to all children under 18 years old through July 19 at several Community Unit School District 300 schools in Carpentersville, according to the district. It also is available to adults enrolled in a state-approved educational program for those with mental or physical disabilities.

Lunch will be served 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays at Carpentersville Middle School, 100 Cleveland Ave., Carpentersville.

Four schools, including Dundee-Crown High School in Carpentersville, will serve both breakfast and lunch. Breakfast is 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., and lunch is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at the high school, 1500 Kings Road.

Golfview Elementary School, 124 Golfview Lane, will serve breakfast from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. and lunch from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Lakewood School, 1651 Ravine Lane, will serve breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Meadowdale Elementary School, 14 Ash St., will serve breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
