ST. CHARLES — A Minnesota man who was hospitalized after being in custody at the Kane County jail has died, the Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.
At 6 a.m. May 18, Keith Renfroe, 20, of Cottage Grove, Minn., was booked into the jail, charged by the Gilberts Police Department with felony criminal trespassing. That evening, Renfroe was placed in a cell by himself.
At 1:55 a.m. May 19, a corrections officer saw Renfroe standing by the sink/toilet area of his cell. When the officer conducted his next check at 2:12 a.m. May 19, he found Renfroe lying face down and unresponsive, the sheriff’s office said.
Medical staff and corrections officers on duty performed CPR on Renfroe until paramedics transported him to Delnor Hospital’s emergency room in Geneva.
Renfroe was later transferred to the intensive care unit.
Renfroe died on May 24 after being removed from life support at his family’s request.
An autopsy was conducted, and toxicology reports are pending, the sheriff’s office said.
The investigation continues.
