ELGIN — Bail was set at $5 million Friday for an Elgin man accused sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl. When her adult female cousin walked in on the act, according to police, the man also attacked and raped the cousin.
Jesus E. Hernandez, 38, of the 300 block of McClure Avenue, was charged with a Class X felony count of aggravated sexual criminal assault while armed with a weapon; and Class 1 felony counts of criminal sexual assault with the threat of force, attempted predatory criminal sexual assault to a child under the age of 13, aggravated criminal sexual abuse with a dangerous weapon, and aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim under the age of 13.
According to police, the adult victim, her two children and three cousins had gone to Hernandez’s home on Wednesday. The adult victim put four of the children to bed in the apartment’s only bedroom, leaving one child asleep on the living room floor. She left the bedroom door open and also went to bed.
When the woman woke up in the early morning hours Thursday to find the bedroom door closed, she went in and found Hernandez on top of the 10-year-old girl and holding a knife.
According to the victim, Hernandez offered her $500 not to report the incident to police.
When she refused, she told police, Hernandez said “if he was going to prison for rape, he might as well rape two,” and raped her as well while armed with the knife.
He again offered the victim money not to report the incident, she said.
She called 911 after Hernandez fell asleep, police said.
His next court appearance is set for June 1.
