The Kane County Forest Preserve District will offer free wood chips to the public on the last two weekends in May.
Wood chips will be available for pickup from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 19-20 and May 26-27 at Burnidge Forest Preserve in Elgin.
Residents can take as much as they can haul. Residents need to bring their own shovels and containers. District staff will not be on hand with equipment or to help load vehicles. Preserve signs will direct people to the pile location.
The wood chips are from hardwood trees removed throughout Kane County because of storm damage or clearing efforts. None of the chips are from ash trees.
Burnidge Forest Preserve is at 38W235 Big Timber Road, Elgin. For more information, call 630-232-5980 or go to www.kaneforest.com.
