ELGIN — A 12-year-old Elgin girl, Diana Lopez, was in Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge Tuesday afternoon after she was struck by a car Monday night as she attempted to cross six lanes of traffic on State Street at Kimball Street.
Police Lt. Glenn Theriault said officers continue to investigate the accident but they believe that a 2007 BMW, driven by 76-year-old Richard Nemec of the 100 block of Thorobred Lane in Sleepy Hollow, was traveling northbound on State Street at about 7 p.m. through the green light when it struck Lopez. He said Lopez was trying to cross State Street from the southeast corner.
Lopez was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Hospital with what Theriault described as serious head injuries and then was transferred to Lutheran General for further treatment.
Kimball and State streets were closed for more than two hours while police worked the scene. Theriault said no charges or citations are anticipated but anyone with information is encouraged to call (847) 289-2700
