Guest suspected: Police were looking for a 21-year-old homeless Elgin man suspected of stealing from the two women who let him stay in their apartment in recent days. A 43-year-old woman told police she has been letting the man sleep overnight in an apartment that she and another woman are house-sitting in the 600 block of Keep Avenue. On Tuesday, she said, both she and the other woman noticed small amounts of cash were missing from their purses. Then, when she came home from work Wednesday evening, a laptop computer and a DVD player were missing, as was the male house guest, police were told.

Sherman lot burglary: A car was reported burglarized Wednesday while parked in the lot at Sherman Hospital, 1425 N. Randall Road. A Sherman employee said she left the building at 11:25 p.m. and found that someone had smashed a window in her car. She had left her purse in the car and its contents were dumped out on a seat, but nothing seemed to be missing, she told police.

Storage area burglarized: The owner of Able Roofing of Elgin told police that someone burglarized a storage area he uses at 314 Brook St. between 7:30 and 9 a.m. Wednesday, stealing thousands of dollars worth of tools. Police said the burglar pried the lock plate off an outside door to the building, then kicked in the doorway to the storage area and probably unloaded the items via a loading dock connected to the storage area. A witness gave police a description of a sport utility vehicle seen in the area, driven by a woman.

Vacant home entered: Someone broke into a vacant home in the 300 block of Ryerson Avenue, cut the copper pipes out of it and stole its water heater, the owner told police Wednesday. Numerous vacant houses in Elgin have been the targets of similar copper thefts in recent months.
