Cash switched at Elgin church

A building contractor who lives in Sleepy Hollow told Elgin police Tuesday that someone stole a hidden cache of cash from his truck, probably while it was parked outside a church in the 1000 block of North Randall Road on Saturday. The man said he keeps $1,850 in the truck, made up of 18 $100 bills and one $50 bill, in case he has to pay for incidental business expenses. But he noticed Tuesday that someone had replaced that pile with about the same number of $1 and $5 bills, totaling just $52.

Counterfeit repeater: A man twice tried to buy cigars at a gas station in the 100 block of Kimball Street by paying for them with a counterfeit $20 bill, the station manager told police Tuesday. The manager said the man succeeded in his crime Jan. 21, when employees didn’t notice the bill was bogus until after the customer had left. That incident was never reported to police. But when the man tried to do the same thing on Jan. 28, the clerk on duty challenged him and the man fled, the manager told police.

Clock stolen: A 73-year-old man who lives in the 1000 block of Reserve Drive told police that someone stole an antique clock from his kitchen wall between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday. Officers found no sign of forced entry, but the man said he might have forgotten to lock the home’s front door.

Shoplifting arrest: Joseph M. Coughlin Jr., 24, of East Streamwood Boulevard in Streamwood, was charged with retail theft Tuesday after allegedly trying to steal three computer hard drives from the Target store at 300 S. Randall Road in Elgin. A Target security officer told police he saw Coughlin put the hard drives up his coat sleeve and try to walk out of the store. Coughlin was released on his own recognizance pending a March 24 hearing.

Possession charges: Shauna C. Amigleo, 25, of Northbrook was charged with a felony count of possession of a controlled substance. She was arrested early Wednesday for possessing Suboxone, a medication for opiate addiction, police said. Bail was set at $20,000, and she was given a Feb. 15 court date.

Ran from officers: Mark A. Musaraca Jr., 26, of Sugar Grove, was charged with misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence and resisting a police officer following his arrest Tuesday in Elgin. He is accused of running from police after a traffic stop. Bail was set at $5,000, and he was given a Feb. 15 court date.

Broke handcuffs: Hector Lara, 27, homeless, was charged with criminal damage to state-supported property. He is accused of breaking a pair of police handcuffs Tuesday. Bail was set at $50,000, and he was given a Feb. 15 court date.

Huntley

House burglarized: An undisclosed amount of cash was reported stolen Saturday in the burglary of a home in the 11600 block of Leland Lane, police reported this week.

Counterfeit hundred: Someone used a counterfeit $100 bill on Jan. 18 to buy merchandise from a store in the 12300 block of Route 47, police reported this week.
