Updated: March 1, 2012 8:42AM

CARPENTERSVILLE — Firefighters were dispatched at 5:52 p.m. on Sunday to Meadowdale Mall, on Route 25, in response to a panel fire alarm.

According to Todd Middendorf, Carpentersville Fire Department battalion chief, firefighters forced their way into the unit, occupied by a church, and discovered smoke.

The fire was under control by 6:20 p.m. Firefighters determined the fire was caused by an unattended candle. A church service had been held there Sunday morning, Middendorf said.

Damage to the building and contents was estimated at $10,000.
