Man accused of using own balcony to access neighbor’s apartment

An Elgin man was arrested at about 11 p.m. Friday and charged with criminal trespassing for attempting to enter a neighbor’s apartment through her second-floor balcony.

According to police, Martin Miralrio, 24, of the 700 block of Kenneth Circle, admitted he’d been on his neighbor’s balcony after police were called to the apartment for a report of an attempted break-in in progress.

The victim called police while locked in her bathroom, saying someone was on her second-floor balcony attempting to open her sliding glass door.

Miralrio was also charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction of identification for initially giving police a false birthdate.

Pot growing: Robert D. Williams, 43, of the 300 block of Cassidy Lane, Elgin, was charged Thursday with production or possession of marijuana plants. Bail was set at $60,000, and he was given a Feb. 12 court date.

Copper burglary: A Realtor reported Thursday that somebody entered a vacant home in the 2000 block of Harvard Lane between Jan. 11 and Jan. 19, and stole an esimated $2,000 worth of copper piping. As in many of the similar burglaries committed in recent months, police could find no sign of forced entry.

On Friday, police received a report that the former owner of a foreclosed home in Elgin’s historic district had removed a stained glass window and is attempting to sell it on the Internet. According to police, the home, located in the 500 block of Margaret Place, is currently owned by Wells Fargo Bank. The former owner lives in Brookside, Fla., where he has allegedly listed the window for sale on Craigslist. Police are continuing to investigate the matter.

Kane County

Nine students escaped serious injury Friday morning when a bus carrying special needs youngsters ran off the roadway and tipped onto its side on Granart Road near Big Rock.

All nine students, one adult aide and the bus driver were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.

And later in the day, several of those students were back in class at the Krejci Academy, part of the Little Friends agency in Naperville, which serves students with special needs.

All the children in the bus were wearing seat belts, as required by North American School Bus.

The crash is still under investigation, but as of Saturday no tickets had been issued, police said. Police did not release the identity of the driver.
