VFW Auxiliary to raise funds with quilt program

Updated: November 10, 2011 10:39AM

HAMPSHIRE — When it comes to unusual fundraising ideas, the women of the VFW Auxiliary Post 8043 have come upon something new. The group is hosting a one-of-a-kind quilting program that doesn’t involve sewing, cutting or batting, and no experience is necessary.

“This is not an instruction course, but rather a chance to hear a guest speaker talk about different quilt projects. I had seen this in Genoa and thought people would enjoy it. It’s a good program,” VFW Auxiliary Spokeswoman Doris Klock said.

The auxiliary decided to venture into this new fundraising effort as they were looking for funding opportunities for the $250 scholarships they give to seniors at Hampshire High School and Burlington Central High School each year. Guest speaker Lizz Ploppert will share funny and amusing anecdotes on the topic of quilting while showcasing her unusual quilt box designs, such as a quilted birdhouse, and other projects.

Ploppert said she began quilting about 12 years ago, but has been craft-sewing for over 40 years. She said her program will be a trunk show of her “magical quilts.”

“My three-dimensional quilts may appear to be exactly what they seem — a birdhouse, a baby’s toy, a Chinese takeout box — but don’t be so sure about that,” Ploppert said. The boxes open up to become wall hangings.

The auxiliary will be selling advance tickets for the program at $5 each, as well as offering admittance at the gate for the same price. The program will be at St. John Lutheran Church, 13N353 French Road in Burlington, at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

There will be a question-and-answer session following the program, and light refreshments will be served. Ticket holders will receive a chance at winning a number of raffle prizes, including a leather shoulder bag and a knitted afghan.

Advance tickets can be purchased by calling (847) 683-3094.
