Communities remember 9/11

Communities, churches and civic organizations throughout the Fox Valley will pause next week to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the nation will be remembered with flags, patriotic songs and moments of silence. Here are some of the events:

Elgin

The city of Elgin’s ceremonies will be at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at Civic Plaza.

This event will be emceed by Floyd Brown and will begin with posting of the colors by the American Legion Post 57 Color Guard.

The National Anthem will be sung by T.E. Bedford Children’s Choir of the Second Baptist Church of Elgin, with audience participation. The choir is led by Latrisha Jones, minister of music.

Elgin Fire Department Chaplain Pastor Pollock will offer the invocation, and Mayor David Kaptain will bring welcome remarks.

Guests will include Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda and Elgin Fire Chief John Fahy.

The guest speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Edmond of Second Baptist Church of Elgin.

There will be a Sounding of the Bells by the Elgin Fire Department and musical selections by an ensemble. American Legion Elgin Post 57 will present an honor guard salute, followed by Taps by a bugler.

T.E. Bedford Children’s Choir will sing “God Bless America,” followed by a benediction by Elgin police Senior Chaplain Robert Fales.

Very limited seating will be available, and the public is asked to bring lawn chairs. In case of inclement weather, the program will be conducted inside the lobby of the Hemmens Cultural Center.

Elgin Choral Union and ESO

The Elgin Choral Union, the city of Elgin and the Elgin Symphony Orchestra will present “A Concert of Remembrance” commemorating the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way.

Led by Maestro Andrew Lewis, the concert will feature Brahms’ “A German Requiem,” written for the living as they remember those who have passed away; and John Adams’ contemporary “On the Transmigration of Souls,” which was written specifically for the New York Philharmonic to perform on the first anniversary of Sept. 11. Tickets for “A Concert of Remembrance” can be purchased by visiting www.hemmens.org; via phone at 847-931-5900; or in person at the Hemmens box office at 45 Symphony Way. Ticket prices range from $25 to $50. The concert is sponsored by the Cornelia A. and Florence B. Palmer Foundation, Duchossois Family Foundation, Walgreens, Otto Engineering, Jack and Marlene Shales, and others.

Carpentersville

Events in Carpentersville will center on the Healing Field at Carpenter Park. Events will be held all week.

Today: Noon, Flag assembly at Otto Engineering, 10 W. Main St.

Wednesday, Sept. 7: 7 p.m. Opening ceremonies and flag dedication

Thursday, Sept. 8, and Friday, Sept. 9: From 7 a.m. to dusk, the Healing Fields will be open

Saturday, Sept. 10: 7 p.m. Candlelight service.

Sunday, Sept. 11:

10 a.m.: Permanent Firefighter Memorial dedication at Fire Station 1.

10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: LifeSource Blood Drive, Healing Field, Carpenter Park

10:30 a.m.: Non-denominational worship service

Noon: 9/11 Memorial parade

1:30 p.m.: Patriot Day program, Healing Field, Carpenter Park

3 p.m.: U.S. Air Force fly-over

3:30 p.m. Closing ceremony and flag pick-up begins

Hampshire

“Salute to Patriotism” is the theme for the village of Hampshire commemoration on Sept. 11. Events will be centered at the fire station on Washington Avenue.

At 6:30 p.m., a silent parade begins on Terwilliger east of Prairie, going west to Prairieview Parkway; across Route 72 to Schmidt Drive, northeast to Jack Dylan Drive; east to Getzelman Road, north to Route 72; east to Romke Road; north to Jake Lane west to White Oak Street, north to Panama Avenue; west to State Street, north to Washington Avenue and east to the fire station.

At 7 :30 p.m., the program will begin at the fire station. The program will include:

Posting of colors by the American Legion post. A flag flown recently over the U.S. Capitol will be presented to the fire chief by the Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

Members of the Hampshire High School band and chorus perform during the ceremony.

A memorial service led by fire department Chaplain Gavin Brandt, including the Hampshire High School Chamber Orchestra and the Dundee Scottish Pipe Band.

Comments by local dignitaries.

The event will close with a 21-gun salute by the American Legion and VFW posts. After, there will be an open house at the fire station with coffee, punch and cookies.

Visitors are asked to park after 6:45 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church or at the post office. Several streets will be closed for the parade.

Huntley

The village will be paying tribute Sunday to the men and women who lost their lives during the terrorist attics.

Management Assistant Barb Read said the program will begin at noon in the James C. Dahmer Town Square with pastors from three churches speaking as well as Village President Charles Sass.

The theme of the program is “We Will Never Forget” and will feature an honor guard of members from the local American Legion post. That group will also play Taps for those who have lost their lives.

Coral Street will be closed during the half-hour program. There will be ample seating in the park and along Coral Street for residents who wish to attend the event.
