HAMPSHIRE — The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8043, founded in 1948, celebrated its 65th anniversary this week.

The Hampshire auxiliary received a letter of congratulations on its anniversary from the national auxiliary’s headquarters in Kansas City, Mo.

Hampshire auxiliary member Arlene Reiser said that some of the auxiliary’s original Hampshire area members were Lucille Connery, Velda Grimes, Bernice Jones, Elsie Prenner and Sally Seyller.

The auxiliary received a check for $667 this week from Hampshire VFW Post 8043 Cmdr. Lowell “Whitey” Reiser as its half of the proceeds from the annual poppy sales.

Funds from poppy sales go to help veterans in service, veterans and their families who are in need, veteran hospitals, and VFW National Home for Children.

This year, the Hampshire auxiliary had four generations of one family selling poppies: Fran Stuehler of Hampshire; her daughter, Hampshire VFW Auxiliary president Donna Proffitt of Union; Proffitt’s daughter, Tara Anderson; and Anderson’s daughter, Jade, 3.

Hampshire VFW Post 8043 was established in 1946. Reiser has served its commander for the past 11 years.

Reiser will be retiring this month.

Reiser served during the Korean War. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

“We would like to thank Whitey for all of the work that he’s done,” said Proffitt.

Reiser in turn thanked the auxiliary.

“Post 8043 can’t do without you,” he said.

Giving back

The Hampshire VFW gives out two $500 scholarships each year, one to a Hampshire High School student and one to a Central High School student. The Hampshire VFW Auxiliary also gives out an annual $300 scholarship to a Hampshire High student and to a Central High student.

To be eligible for a scholarship, the students must show involvement in helping their community and have a family member who served in the U.S. military.

The Hampshire auxiliary currently has 79 members. It welcomes new members.
