Elgin: Naturalist to speak
A naturalist with the Kane County Forest Preserve District will speak at the Elgin Lions Club meeting Tuesday at the Holiday Inn, 585 Toll Gate Road. The meeting starts at 6:15 p.m., the public is invited to attend. The naturalist will talk about the preserves in the district and answer questions about the wildlife and vegetation that can be found in the approximately 65 properties and 19,932 acres owned by the district. Forest district properties include shelters, bike trails, equestrian areas, camping areas, boating and fishing facilities, golf courses, a lodge, and Elfstrom Stadium. Those wishing to attend must notify the club on the Elgin Lions Club phone answering service at 847-289-4206 and leave a message. Advance notification is necessary to provide adequate seating and meals.
Elgin: Sustainability group report
The Sierra Club VOF will host a discussion of the work of the Elgin Sustainability Commission at 7 p.m. Feb. 11 at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, 28 Brookside Drive. It will include Megan Butler providing a summary of her work making area homes more energy-efficient. Aaron Cosentino, city liaison to the commission, also will talk about the group’s plans.
Elgin: Fish fry, bingo at Post 57
American Legion Post 57 at 820 N. Liberty St. welcomes the public to attend its weekly Friday Night Fish Fry from 4 to 7:30 p.m. . The fish fry with all the trimmings features a choice of haddock, perch and catfish. Elgin: VFW Post 1307 offering bingo
VFW Post No. 1307 at 1601 Weld Road hosts bingo open to the public every Tuesday night. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and several bingo games have progressive jackpots that are growing weekly. A variety of refreshments will be available for purchase in the post kitchen by the ladies auxiliary, and a full cash bar service also is available. Other VFW events include fish fries every Friday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. featuring three-piece cod, shrimp or burger dinners; and a daily lunch starting at 11 a.m. For more information, including about hall rental and membership, call Norma at 847-888-9809.
Dist. 300: Preschool/kindergarten signups
District 300 preschool and kindergarten registration will take place this month for the 2013-14 school year. Registration is a required annual process for all students. Preschool program space is limited; and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Preschool registration is open to the general public this Monday through Friday. Kindergarten registration is open to the general public Feb. 18-22. Call your nearest District 300 elementary school for times.
