St. Charles: Classes set for Citizen’s Police Academy

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a part of the law enforcement profession? The St. Charles Police Department is once again hosting their annual Citizen’s Police Academy starting March 5, 2013 through April 30, 2013.

The Citizen Police Academy is meant to give its students a better understanding how the St. Charles Police Department operates. Some of the areas covered in the CPA are: criminal and narcotics investigations, arrest and courts procedures, traffic stops, the K-9 unit, SWAT Team, crime scene processing, domestic violence, and the Firearms Training Simulator (F.A.T.S.).

When possible, the curriculum makes use of both classroom instruction and outside demonstrations, where the student can get an opportunity to do the activity being demonstrated, such as; processing a “crime scene” for fingerprints, getting a radar reading on a moving vehicle, or shooting on the F.A.T.S. machine. The CPA has an added benefit of being a sounding board on how the police department is meeting the needs of our citizens.

The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7 to 9 p.m., for 8 weeks starting the first week in March. Most of the classes are held in the St. Charles Police Department training room at 211 N. Riverside Avenue, St. Charles. A graduation is usually held the Tuesday following the last class. Applications can be picked up at the front lobby of the Police Department (630-377-4435) or downloaded from the city website at: www.stcharlesil.gov under “Crime Prevention.” Once the application has been completed, it can be dropped off or mailed to the St. Charles Police Department in care of Officer Bill Tynan at: 211 N. Riverside Avenue, St. Charles, Illinois 60174. All applications are subject to approval. The class is open, free of charge, to St. Charles residents, property and business owners and their employees, and approved St. Charles high school juniors and seniors. The last day to submit an application is Feb. 26, 2013. For more information, contact Officer Bill Tynan at 630-443-3730, or btynan@stcharlesil.gov.
