Algonquin: Riverfront Park Concert series starts today
The village of Algonquin hosts this year’s Algonquin Riverfront Park Summer Concert Series. Concerts are held weekly on Thursday evenings and begin at 7:30 p.m., beginning today. These free concerts are a great way to enjoy the summer with one’s family around a picnic dinner. Parking is available on and around North Harrison Street. In the event of inclement weather, concerts may be canceled. Call 847-658-2716 or visit www.algonquin.org/recreation for status information and further details on each concert. Tonight’s show is the Big Band sounds of Bopology. On July 5, R-Gang will perform Motown and R&B music.
Streamwood: Lao American group hosts health event
The Lao American Organization Elgin (LAOE), in partnership with the Asian Health Coalition (AHC) and VNA Health Care, will present a free “Let’s Celebrate Health” luncheon to encourage human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and breast and cervical health to prevent cancer. LAOE community health worker Manivong Nanthavongsa will give a presentation on breast and cervical health. Her daughter, Janette Nanthavongsa, also a community health worker, will talk to the girls in attendance about navigating adolescence, their changing bodies, and healthy choices. A nurse from VNA Health Care will discuss the HPV vaccine to prevent cancer. Attendees also will get information on where to receive the vaccine and breast and cervical care, and how to cover the costs through Medicaid, insurance or financial assistance. Laotian women and girls age 9-26 are encouraged to attend. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Seville, 700 South Barrington Road, Streamwood. Call 630-289-4500.
