Oh, the passing of actor Andy Griffith at age 86 has us hankering for some good eating.
Because if you ever watched “The Andy Griffith Show,” you know they spent a lot of time around the table chowing down.
I went into the Sun-Times Food archives (what a dusty place) and dug out our 1991 story — by former Food maven Sharon Sanders — on the Mayberry Cookbook (Rutledge Hill Press), a compilation of the kind of Southern classics Aunt Bee used to prepare for Andy and Opie and whoever else stopped by for a spell.
I know Aunt Bee used to make a mean pot roast and lots of other savory treats, but somehow, whenever I think of them eating, I think of the sweets (not sure if this is because that’s what the show truly centered on or because my sweet tooth rules my memory).
Here is Opie’s Favorite Buttermilk Pie from the cookbook. It actually was provided by Opie/Ronnie Howard’s real-life mom.
With the temperature threatening to hit triple digits, today might not be the day you’ll want to bake it. But when things cool down, make this quick classic pie in Griffith’s honor.
