BP says it has received more than 6,500 claims from customers needing repairs after fueling up with some of the almost 5 million gallons of tainted gasoline recalled in three states.
Among the stations — either BP stations or others that purchased fuel from BP — which sold the tainted gas are dozens around the Fox Valley, including five in Aurora, two in Batavia and one in North Aurora.
The oil giant says Indiana residents filed more than 4,000 claims through Monday, Illinois residents filed about 2,000 and the rest came from residents of Wisconsin and other states.
Company spokesman Scott Dean said BP isn’t commenting on two lawsuits seeking class-action status in U.S. District Court in Hammond, Ind. Each lead plaintiff in the cases filed Friday alleges the recalled gas caused repair bills of nearly $1,000 or more.
Dean said customers whose vehicles were impacted by the gasoline are covered by the BP guarantee. BP said it has begun paying claims and expects the payments to accelerate throughout the week. BP is accepting sales receipts, credit/debit card records and repair bills electronically.
BP has recalled about 4.9 million gallons from its Whiting, Ind., refinery. It said gasoline now coming from the refinery has been tested and meets quality standards.
The company has posted a searchable database for consumers who want to check whether gas stations they frequent had tainted gasoline.
To check a station, go to BP’s site, www.bpresponse.com. By typing in the name of a city, the site will list the addresses of the retail sites that received “off-specification gasoline.”
Dean said the recalled gas is shipped back to the refinery for reprocessing to make sure it meets quality standards, then it is put out on the market for sale.
BP also has set up a call center to receive complaints: 800-333-3991.
