Hampshire-area man dies in early morning rollover

Burlington Township

Man dies in rollover: A Hampshire Township man was killed when the pickup truck he was driving left the road and rolled over Friday morning, Kane County sheriff’s deputies said. Scott Row, 31, of Widmayer Road, was pronounced dead by Burlington Fire Protection District paramedics at the scene of the crash, on Burlington Road near Romke Road. Deputies responded to the accident about 4:30 a.m. and found Row’s pickup off the east side of Burlington Road. An initial investigation indicated that the truck was traveling north on Burlington when it left the roadway and rolled over. Row, who was the sole occupant of the truck, was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle, deputies said. Deputies located several beer cans at the scene, but it was unknown if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, they said.

Elgin

Man found shot: Police were asking for the public’s help as they investigated the wounding of a man by gunfire on the city’s southeast side Thursday night. Police said they were called to the intersection of Grace and May streets about 8:45 p.m. regarding a report of a shooting. Police found the man, whom authorities did not identify, lying in the street with a gunshot wound. He was transported by fire department paramedics to Provena Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin for treatment of injuries police described as not life-threatening. Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call Elgin’s Anonymous Crime Tip Line at 847-695-4195 or text TIP411.

Cocaine possession: Tony Rincon, 27, of Fairview Boulevard in Rockford, was charged with one count of felony possession of a controlled substance just after midnight Friday. According to police, Rincon was part of a group of men whom patrol officers said they observed yelling outside of a bar in the 0-100 block of North Spring Street. When officers approached the group, police said, Rincon fled into the bar. Police were told by an employee that Rincon had been asked to leave the bar a few minutes earlier. Officers located him in an open stall in the men’s room, where they were told by others there that he was using drugs, police said. He was found with a folded dollar bill containing some white powder that later tested positive for cocaine, police said. Rincon was also charged with obstructing a police officer, a misdemeanor, when he tried to walk out of the bathroom after he was told by police that he was under arrest, police said.

Sucker punch: An 18-year-old Elgin man was transported to Provena Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin with minor injuries after reportedly being beaten Friday night by four other men outside a restaurant in the 0-100 block of Villa Street. The victim, who told police he did not know the men and did not want to press charges, said he was talking on his phone outside the restaurant about 8:45 p.m. when he was approached by four Hispanic men who briefly spoke to him. He told police that when he turned to go into the restaurant, he was sucker punched in the head by one of the men and the other three men then jumped on him. The men fled, but a witness told police of being able to identify the men if they are caught, police said.

Check theft charge: John M. Jefferson, 59, of the 700 block of Jefferson Street, Elgin, was charged with financial exploitation of a person over the age of 70, exploitation of a person over the age of 70, theft by deception and financial exploitation of an elderly person. He is accused of obtaining control of a woman’s checking account and obtaining funds through about 30 checks signed by the woman over the course of about 13 months. His bail on the charges was set at $250,000.

Drug selling charge: Marcus D. Anderson, 37, of the 400 block of West Highland Avenue, Elgin, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver after police executed a search warrant Thursday night, police said. Officers found about 1.5 pounds of marijuana with a street value of about $3,000 along with about $900 cash in his apartment, according to police. The warrant was executed after police responded to neighborhood complaints about traffic in the area. Anderson’s bail was set Friday at $50,000.

Sex offender in park: James J. Powell, 18, homeless of Elgin, was charged again as a sexual predator in a public park, a Class 4 felony. According to police, he was found sitting at Newsome Park, 270 Kimball St., on Thursday. His bail was set at $30,000.

Bartlett

A firefighter was injured during a blaze that caused about $100,000 in damage about 2:30 a.m. Saturday at 812 S. Sheridan Road, Bartlett Fire Protection District officials said. According to information released by the district, a resident of the single-family home tried to put the fire out using a garden hose before calling 911. When firefighters arrived, they discovered the back of the house engulfed in flames and heavy smoke coming from the roof. The fire, which was still under investigation, reportedly began near the base of the deck stairs and traveled up the siding and into the attic space. It took firefighters about 25 minutes to get the blaze under control, the district said. The rear of the home, along with the roof and attic, sustained significant fire damage, as well as water and smoke damage to the second floor. One male firefighter was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to reports. Hanover Park, Carol Stream and Streamwood agencies also responded to the blaze. The residents were displaced from the home and reportedly will be staying with friends or possibly a hotel. Fire officials reminded the public not to try to extinguish a fire themselves but to evacuate the premises and call 911 immediately.

Carpentersville

Ecstasy delivery charges: Umraan R. Sayed, 19, of the 4000 block of Windridge Court, Carpentersville, was charged with multiple counts of unlawful delivery of ecstasy, unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park, possession of ecstasy with intent to deliver, possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested Thursday near Grandview Park in Carpentersville, police said. His bail was set Friday at $300,000.

Drug look-alike charges: Joseph A. Pinsel, 19, of the 1400 block of Richmond Lane, Algonquin, was charged with manufacturing a look-alike substance. His bail was set at $25,000.

St. Charles

Sex offender violation: A mother and her son were charged with violating the Child Sex Offender Registration Act after they moved into a residence determined to be too close to a day care center, police said. Wilma D. Mannella, 53, and Joshua J. Mannella, 24, of 1624 Covington Court, St. Charles, who are both registered child sex offenders, moved from Geneva to the Covington address on Tuesday, despite being warned it might be less than the 500-foot minimum from a day care center as required by law, police said. After they registered with St. Charles police as required by law, a police detective on Thursday measured the distance to the day care center and found it was only about 384 feet away. Each was charged with unlawful residency of a child sex offender, according to reports.
