LAKE IN THE HILLS — A couple was hurt and three pets died early Monday in a house fire, authorities said.

According to Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District assistant chief Peter Van Dorpe, firefighters were called out at 1:33 a.m. to a home at responded to 305 Chippewa Trail. Dispatch was notified by the resident who discovered fire coming from a bedroom of his home.

A man and woman who were inside had already exited when the fire department arrived, Van Dorpe said.

Both were taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin for treatment of smoke inhalation, and the man also suffered burns, Van Dorpe said. Their conditions were unknown.

When firefighters entered the home, they found two cats dead in the room of the fire, Van Dorpe said. A dog also was found dead in the adjacent living room, he said.

The cause of the fire was being investigated, but foul play is not suspected, Van Dorpe said. Damage was estimated at more than $40,000.

Firefighters from Carpentersville, Crystal Lake, Huntley, Fox River Grove and Barrington Countryside Fire departments assisted in fighting the fire.
