A fire of unknown origin did significant damage to a home at Washington and Maple in the old town section of Carpentersville Tuesday night.
Shortly before 9 p.m. firefighters were called to the home at 104 N. Washington by a passerby who spotted smoke coming from the roof. When they arrived, firefighters found the fire had already caused significant structural damage and went into defensive mode in battling the blaze, remaining on the scene until shortly after 3 a.m.
No one was hurt fighting the fire, and residents were not home at the time of the fire. Battalion Chief Kieran Stout said a relative of the occupants was trying to contact them about what happened.
Stout said that the fire remains under investigation, but that foul play was not suspected.
Crews from East Dundee, Rutland Dundee, and West Dundee assisted on the call.
